RE: Extra insurance on your "empty for 6 months" house?

Well I have good news birdies!! Finally called our insurance co and this is the deal in Massachusetts at least. If you leave your house for part of the year with all intention on returning, leaving it's contents intact as usual and it being your main domicile we are covered no problem. If you rent it, have a housesitter, empty it, leave for more than a year it all changes and you need different/more insurance.

RE: Closing house & turning off heat??

We live in Massachusetts and we leave for at least 6 months. For the last two year we have drained the house completely (we do it ourselves) hubby is pretty handy at this stuff. We use an air compressor to make sure all the water is out of the pipes and then put antifreeze in toilets, traps etc. We did'nt dare leave the heat on low just in case of power outage and freeze ups. It's worked really well for us with no problems. The first year we fogot to drain the icemaker in the fridge and the pipe in there fractured but that was it. Take us two hours to do it and then the town comes and picks up the water meter. We sleep in the driveway that night if needs be and off in the am. When we get home we reverse it all and all has been well. DH has put in a few low lying places for water to exit .. a little knowledge of plumbing would be good. You could get a plumber in to do to it easy enough tho. Don't have to pay for oil all winter either. Happy Trails Lynn

Extra insurance on your "empty for 6 months" house?

Greetings my fellow feathered friends! we are getting ready to leave when DH says "I wonder if our home insurance policy covers us even when we are not living in the house".. I'd rather not have heard this but there ya go, I did. Him says "what if it was broken into and burned to the ground and insurance company says, ah but you were not living in it there for not covered!". Before trekking down to the insurance shop to dish out money I thought I kick it out here and see what everyone else does. Back to packing now. Thanks Lynn

RE: RV Insurance

For anyone thats interested in Mass RV Insurance. I FINALLY found one that will at least insure RV. Foremost Insurance. To cover the RV for just about everything EXCEPT liability (not available in Mass even tho it is everywhere else) and with $100 deductable and $1,000.00 personal property coverage was $398.00 per year. That also gives a total loss replacement of a new RV (ours is a 2008) To increase the personal property insurance to $10,000.00 kicked up the premium to $443.00 per year. Jewellry allowence was covered only up to $100 so leave the rocks at home girls. :) Still working on what we'll do... any help would be appreciated. I'll check out yours suggestions hitchup, thanks for the input. Lynn

RV Insurance

Hi all... getting ready to leave Massachusetts for Florida for 6 months in our travel trailer. We have insurance for when it's attached to the truck of course and also a little extra for when it's "on site" but it can only be "on site" for a max of one month to be covered. We realize we need more insurance for liability, contents etc and I'm getting a couple of quotes, one from AON. I'd apprecitate any input re who you guys use and any experiences you've had. Progressive is out for us, they don't function in Massachusetts.. (a lot of things don't function in Massachuetts!) We do six months in Mass. Six months in Fl. Look forward to hearing from you.. Lynn :)

RE: Medicare and extra insurance

Wow! thanks Bretman and Dilfo. Good stuff here, just what I was hoping for. We are quite yet 65 (both 63) but I'm doing the research now. We have blue cross and I'll probably stay with them with a ppo or medex bronze.. still reading. I'm going to go with as much coverage as I can afford, just makes sense to do so. For an extra few hundred dollars a year it may save us from disaster. I am a cancer survivor and very healthy but who knows down the line. Thanks again everyone for your candid advice and info. Much appreciated. Lynn

Medicare and extra insurance

Hi all, We spend 6 months roaming around warmer climates and spend quite a lot of time in Florida in winter. We are both 63 and looking forward to being able to have Medicare. I've done some reading but would like to hear from you folks who are actually "doing it" as to the reality of the situation. I heard a comment on NPR this morning from a retired medicare recipient who said "it's hard to find a doctor who takes medicare"????? that made me sit up and take notice. I always assumed that we'd have extra supplemental insurance at a reasonable cost? and we'd be able to turn up at any hospital or doctor's office basically anywhere and be o.k. Have you had experiences with being "turned away"? I'm thinking mainly Florida at this point. How much are you having to pay for supplemental insurance? Any advice would be much appreciated. Can't wait for November. Lynn Massachusetts

RE: Garden State Parkway NJ and trailers

thanks all.. we are starting to plan our winter getaway (our third) so we are testing out all different routes. This year I think we are planning to aim for Charleston SC first on our way to Florida so NJ would probably be our best bet not 81 which we have taken before. Thanks Weathershak - sounds like the Tapanzee and then turnpike would be good. Wish I was leaving today :( Lynn thanks for the link dreamsfloat :)

RE: Weber Baby Q and 20# Propane Tanks

We have bought (and taken back) two hoses with this same problem. Hose worked fine for a day and then boom, no gas. We were connecting from a 20lb tank to a small grill (several different grills, took them back too, thought it was the grills!!)... so anyway.. we have big hose frustration. How do you take the excess flow restrictor out? be aware this is wife asking, hubby may know but I need to know too as hose/grill issue is building to explosion point. Thanks all. Happy RVing Lynn

RE: New travel trailer wobbles on site badly

RE: New travel trailer wobbles on site badly

thanks for input.. yes that sound an idea. Did it stop the wobble AND the bounce or just the bounce. Our scissor jacks are on at a 45degree angle as opposed to aligning with the front and rear.. which seems to enable them to wobble in any direction. Do you have scissor jacks and are they aligned in the same way?

New travel trailer wobbles on site badly

Hi all hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. We have just traded our 21ft tt for a 28ft Alumalite tt. We love it but are experiencing a lot of on site wobble and jiggle even tho we have our 4 scissor stabilizers down correctly. The front Jack wobbles with weight on it, so that does'nt help, the scissor jacks seem to wobble a lot more than the other jack system on the little 21 ft tt. We need something to stabilize it from side to side more than up and down... we've looked in Camping World and see there are such items but do they work? any help would be greatly appreciated. We love the unit apart from this little issue. Is there anything that would attach to the ball socket for ease of application as we move around a lot. Thanks Lynn
